Initially, Taka was hesitant—describing his reaction as, "Are you sure? It's too ‘pop'. It's totally not a ONE OK ROCK song!"—but he agreed to give it a chance, acknowledging the importance of reaching broader audiences, especially in the U.S. music scene. Despite his reservations, the band proceeded, even performing the track during tours with All Time Low and Sleeping With Sirens, where Taka confessed he felt "a little embarrassing" playing it live at first.

The song features Kellin Quinn, adding a dynamic blend of vocal styles that bridges ONE OK ROCK's rock roots with a catchy, anthemic pop-rock chorus. While "Paper Planes" might stray from their usual intensity, it reflects the band's willingness to evolve and take creative risks, particularly in their global crossover efforts.
